Have a lovely half-term
We all hope that the children have had a good Term 1. It has had some lovely highlights and lots of adventures – many in the last week or so – see below for all that we have been up to.
The newsletter has had some lovely feedback – please let us know if we can do anything else to improve our communication.
Did you know on the new newsletter you can dismiss a recurring story? Simply click dismiss at the end of a repeated story and it won’t show next time you load he newsletter.
Did you know you can use the year group buttons on the left hand side to filter on stories – this will allow you to only see stories for Year 4 for example and all general stories.
The newsletter also has a contents list, which you can click on to move through the stories listed. Hopefully this will help you find the stories easily.
Lateness reminder for Term 2 focus
Next term, we will be really focusing on supporting good time keeping. Minutes late are minutes of learning lost.
As we look ahead to Term 2, why not use these helpful tips to start a great new habit and make getting to school on time a little easier? Small changes can make a big difference!
Catch up on Reception
Wow! What a great start the children have had to Reception. We feel like they have been here for ages and are great members of our school community already. They have been busy learning all of the routines at school and have wasted no time in making great new friendships. We have even been learning to read and write! This week we have enjoyed retelling the gingerbread man story and have even made our own gingerbread men (or ladies) and started to write our own versions of the story.
Daisy and Poppy Class
Please remember to bring in a family photo for our family wall if you have not yet done so. If it is easier please email it to one of the class teachers or the main school email address – [email protected]

Y2 Went to the Zoo
On Thursday Y2 visited Bristol Zoo Project for the day. They saw lots of animals and had a lovely time.

Year 3 Stone Age Workshop
Year 3 showed brilliant curiosity during our Stone Age Workshop on Wednesday. We time travelled through the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic Ages with Professor Dunkenstein, in the search for fire! On the way, we met a wooly mammoth, learnt about how they made some useful tools and made some careful observational drawings.
Well done Year 3 and thank you to the Adventure Team!

Pizza in Year 4
Year four had a superb time making pizzas during our recent DT day. We learnt how to make the dough and used some careful skills to prepare the toppings. There were some glowing food reviews from the taste testing!
Y5 Hawthorn’s Forest School
We had a really lovely day exploring the forest, creating our own crowns and flags, playing team building games and making popcorn!
Y6 Trip to Air-Raid Shelter
Y6 walked to the Air Raid Shelter in St Nicks Market last week. They learned how Bristol was affected by the Blitz in the Second World War using evidence from Castle Park and the artefacts in the underground shelter.

Staffing News
We are delighted to say that Mrs Heritage is expecting her second child after Christmas – we wish her and her family well.
Ms Allen will be taking over the class from January and will continue to job-share with Mr Hutchinson. The children will be familiar with Ms Allen as she is currently in the class weekly doing PPA cover.
Year 4 – save the date….
Year 4 parents are invited into school after drop off on Wednesday 18th November to take part in a Times Table learn along. At the end of Year 4 children have to complete a Multiplication Table Check which is a statutory requirement across the country. We would like to model our approach to teaching and learning the times table facts, share activities that could support at home and also have you do some learning alongside your children.
We will start at 9:00 but you are welcome into the hall once the gates are closed.
If you are unable to make it this time, we hope to arrange further slots, so please do let us know.’

Breakfast Club
Dear Parents/Carers,
We would like to remind all parents and carers that children must be booked onto Breakfast Club in advance, even if they are attending a free session.
Having an accurate register is essential so that we know how many children will be attending each morning and can ensure that we have appropriate staffing levels in place. It is also an important safeguarding requirement, as we need to know exactly which children are in our care.
If your child is not booked onto the MagicBooking register, unfortunately they will not be accepted into Breakfast Club.
We have also noticed that some children have been arriving at Breakfast Club and being dropped off without a parent or carer accompanying them. For safeguarding purposes, parents/carers must remain with their child until they have been safely handed over to a member of the Breakfast Club team.
We appreciate your cooperation with these procedures. They are in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children attending Breakfast Club and to help the club run safely and smoothly each morning.
If you have any questions or need assistance with booking your child onto Breakfast Club, please get in touch with us.
Thank you for your understanding,
JAG team
Attendance
Attendance
As we move into a period where coughs, colds and seasonal illnesses are more common, we understand that it can sometimes be difficult for parents/ carers to decide whether their child is well enough to attend school. School attendance is vital for children’s learning, wellbeing and wider development, and is a strong protective factor for all children and young people, especially the most vulnerable. Missing school due to illness should only be where necessary.
More information on when you should keep children away from educational and early years settings can be found on the NHS website (Is my child too ill for school? – NHS and poster below).
The ‘Caring for children with cough’ leaflet (Caring for Babies and Children with Cough) was produced by researchers at the University of Bristol after extensive work with parents. It explains what parents should do when looking after a child with a cough and when parents should take their child to see a doctor.
Closing a school or early years setting should be a last resort. Any decision to close a setting on Public Health grounds should be discussed in an Incident Management Team meeting and support sought from the UK Health Security Agency and Local Authority Public Health Team.

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches
Another reminder to parents that mobile phones should not be brought in to school.
If they are brought into school we will ask the children to lock them away in safes in their classroom. This includes Smart Watches – so please ensure these are kept at home.
Recent changes in the law, and changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education make it very clear that we need to support children in reducing their screen time and ensuring their safety when they are online. In school we have strict filtering and monitoring to ensure their safety.
For more information on online safety please check out our Online Safety page on our website – https://www.stwerburghs.amplifyeducation.co.uk/page/?title=Online+Safety&pid=106.
Ending of Free School Meal Voucher Scheme
Please see the details from Bristol City Council below.
Healthy Choices
This is another reminder to parents that as a Healthy School, we aim to promote healthy choices and wellbeing throughout the school day. At break time, children should bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit or vegetables. Please do not send sweets, chocolate or other sugary snacks. If your child brings a packed lunch, we also encourage families to make healthy choices and provide a balanced lunch to help children stay energised and ready to learn throughout the afternoon.
We know that birthdays and other special occasions are exciting times for children and families. In school we will be celebrating the children’s birthday’s in class. Due to allergy law changes we are asking parents to NOT bring in any food to share for birthdays or any celebrations.
We would like to remind parents that WE DO NOT ALLOW NUTS.
